What Is A DSL Modem?

A DSL modem, also called DSL Transceiver, is a hardware device that allows a computer to make an Internet connection through a DSL service using regular phone lines. Many DSL modems also act as routers allowing users to connect more than one computer to Internet at a time by creating a network.

Unlike traditional dial up modems, DSL modems operate at higher frequencies, leaving the voice band free to make phone calls. This means that a user can surf the web and speak on the phone at the same time. DSL modems are all external, being connected to a computer via a NIC Card or USB port. This means that it is not possible to configure the modem/router from the BIOS or hardware manger of the computer. The modem/router can be accessed and configured via a web interface that can be reached using a standard browser. The exact address of the router will be available in the manual that came with the product.

DSL modems are not interchangeable with cable modems, as the two devices use different protocols and connection types.
