Free Internet Connection Speed Test

Ever wonder what the download and upload speeds of your Internet connection really are? If you do, there are many Internet speed test programs available that can display exactly how fast your current broadband or dialup connection really is. The test that we personally recommend is found at Speedtest.net, powered by Ookla Net Metrics.

Why Test My Speed?

If you run one or more of these tests, you will have a good idea of how fast your current ISP is, at least at the location where you live. Before you switch to another provider "hoping" that they will be faster, it is best to check your current speed to know exactly how fast your connection is right now. That way, you will have a starting point to compare with other plans and you will know if another ISP can even offer a faster speed.

What Gets Tested?

The way these tests work is that they have you download and upload a large, blank image file, usually around 500 KB to 1 MB in size. First, the system tests how long in takes your connection to download the file, then it reverses the process and uploads the same file back to their server to test your upload speed. A good speed test program will display the results for you in an easy-to-understand graphical format.

It's important to know that nearly all broadband providers limit the upload speeds of their Internet connections. Your download speeds will be much faster, and they are what matter most in downloading MP3s and pictures, watching streaming media, and browsing the Web. So, when you are evaluating your Internet speed test, the important number to take note of is your average download speed.
